Chapter Sixteen

Amaleigh entered the palace through a side door after having to convince the guard she was, in fact, a guest of Prince Gwilym and Princess Cassia. Her disheveled hair and sodden clothing didn’t help, but eventually she persuaded them to let her pass. It might’ve had something to do with her mentioning that she was happy to wait while they tracked down the prince to verify her story. And hinting that the prince was in a rather foul mood, but it was their call whether they wished to risk the prince’s ire any further.

She’d guessed correctly that the prince was indeed in a fit that day and they had no desire to tempt fate. As she half-ran to her rooms, she noticed several servants with their heads bowed, their hands clasped tightly at their waist. She’d seen the same reaction when she and Gwilym used to hide from his father’s rage. Whatever the reason for the fake prince’s anger, she needed to be extra cautious.

The door to her room stood ajar and Amaleigh entered, prepared for an ambush. She wasn’t half-wrong. Cassia and her ladies rose when she entered, their faces identical expressions of concern and alarm. As one, they took in her appearance from head to toe.

“What are you doing in my rooms?” She brushed past Isla on her way to the bathing room. “Haven’t you heard of privacy?”

Cassia laughed a jolly little peal. “Oh, darling. There’s no privacy in a palace.” She followed Amaleigh into the small space and turned the taps to run her a bath. “We were worried. When I came for breakfast and found you gone, I assumed you’d return before lunch, but you didn’t. And now it’s almost dinner time and, well, look at you!” Cassia pointed to Amaleigh with an exasperated huff. “What happened to you?”

“It’s a really long story. Really long. And right now, I need to bathe. Alone.”

Cassia scrunched her nose. “You stink.”

“Yeah, thanks for that. That’s why I need a bath.” She made shooing movements with her hands. “Go. I’ll find you when I’m presentable.”

“Would you like Meri to assist in your bathing?” Cassia beckoned the beauty.

“No. Definitely not. I’m fine. I promise, as soon as I’m dressed, I’ll find you.”

“We’ll be in the queen’s sitting room until it’s time to dine. Do please hurry. There’s so much we need to discuss.” Cassia stared at Amaleigh with meaning, but she didn’t understand the intention behind the words.

Discuss what?

She’d find out later. First, she really did stink.

The princess left with her ladies, and Amaleigh locked the door after them. She took the key with her to the bathing room and set it on a marble shelf. Her clothes she left in a heap on the floor. The hot water soothed her aching muscles, but this wasn’t a luxury bath. She made quick work of scrubbing the sewer from her skin and untangling her braids. Cassia’s ladies would be mortified at the mess she’d made of their lovely braids.

Her hair fanned out beneath the water like wings.
